Description:

Networks are everywhere: the internet, in telecommunications, to model transportation systems, social structures, and relations, echo bubbles of social media platforms, virus spreading in biology, etc. Their complexity arises from the many connections between their nodes or agents, their time or path dependence, their topology, and feedback loops rendering interactions nonlinear. Mathematical methods for describing their static and dynamic features stem from discrete algebra and graph theory, statistical mechanics, operations research, data mining and AI, probabilistic modeling, and social structure. The lectures of this workshop will lay the groundwork and provide a basic view of the underlying concepts, with a focus on modeling. The goal of the workshop is to bridge the different approaches from the different scientific disciplines and to try to establish a common language. The main emphasis will be on the interpretation of results from different network modeling approaches, as well as to point out ethical dangers and misuse to manipulate agents by establishing rules of communication.

The workshop will be held in English.

Please indicate your university and field of study when registering, and please include a short letter of motivation in the comments field.
The number of participants is limited and a large part of the costs will be covered by scholarships - the selection will be made in consultation with the speakers.
